NHS England and Oxford Medical Simulation Provide Free Virtual Reality Training for Doctors

In 2019 the NHS England Diabetes Team partnered with leading VR healthcare education company Oxford Medical Simulation to design virtual reality training scenarios for doctors.

These scenarios were designed to improve the recognition and managment of diabetic emergencies in hospital. They were successfully trialled with emergency department doctors and found to improve clinician confidence and competence managing people with diabetes.

100% of participant deemed the scenarios suitable for their level of practice and 100% stated that the VR scenarios would improve their daily practice. One participant commented: “Honestly this was the single most useful learning experience I’ve had so far in my medical training!” DEVICES Study (Atkinson et al, 2019)

With the urgent need for ongoing socially distanced training during COVID-19, and the proven efficiency and effectiveness of virtual reality training, as of July 2020 the scenarios will be released for free across the NHS.

This initiative is designed to to improve training, optimise patient care and ultimately saves the lives of people with diabetes. It will be delivered for free by the OMS team in order to deliver impact at scale.
